The Children’s Home Society of Idaho was honored on Wednesday by the Ada County Board of Commissioners with the prestigious “Making History Award.” The recognition was the capstone presentation at the annual State of Ada County meeting attended by 350 people at the Boise Convention Centre.
In honoring the Children’s Home Society of Idaho, Commissioner Fred Tilman noted the organization’s sensitive approach to understanding the needs of the community and fulfilling those needs with the highest quality and most relevant services available. The Making History Award is given to individuals and organizations that make history every day by their contributions to Ada County. This is the first organization to be honored according to Commissioner Tilman. Previous “Making History” winners include architect Charles F. Hummel, whose grandfather and namesake, interestingly enough, drew up the plans for the Children’s Home back in 1908. J.R. Simplot was also a past recipient of the award.
“I accept this award on behalf of the people who work hard every day at the Children’s Home Society of Idaho,” said Kara Craig, Chief Executive Oficer of the organization. “Being recognized by the leadership of Ada County is very significant and provides a gratifying way to start our second century of service.”
The Children’s Home Society of Idaho is celebrating its 100th Anniversary with a series of public events this spring. The highlight will be “An Evening with Tony Bennett” which will bring the popular jazz musician to the Morrison Center on Saturday, May 10.
The Children’s Home Society of Idaho has been serving the abandoned, abused and neglected children of Idaho since being established in 1908. Originally founded to privately oversee the state orphanage, today, the Children’s Home continues to promote the social, emotional, and physical well-being of children and families in our community through the Warm Springs Counseling Center and The Bridge. The organization has operated from its historic building on Warm Springs Avenue for its entire 100 year history.

Commissioner Fred Tilman presents the Making History Award to the Honorable Stephen S. Trott, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Kara Craig, Chief Executive Officer, Children’s Home Society of Idaho.

Welcome to the Children’s Home Society of Idaho’s Centennial Celebration website. For the past 100 years, the Children’s Home Society of Idaho (CHS) has been serving the abandoned, abused and neglected children of our community and our state, first as an orphanage and more recently through the Warm Springs Counseling Center (outpatient counseling and assessment program) and The Bridge (a program aimed at providing foster care support, education, recruitment and retention for local regions within the state). Through our programs, we touch the lives of more than 2,700 children and family members per year, giving them hope for a brighter tomorrow.
On Friday, May 2, 2008, we will be celebrating our centennial beginning with a press conference on our steps on historic Warm Springs Ave in Boise, Idaho. This will kick off a week long celebration full of festivities that will culminate on Saturday evening, May 10th, with the concert of the century featuring the one and only Mr. Tony Bennett. The concert will be held at the Morrison Center located in Boise, Idaho. As with Mr. Bennett’s current recording, we truly believe for the Children’s Home…The Best Is Yet To Come.
Please join us in our celebration as we commemorate our very special occasion which will benefit the children and families in our community who need it most.
